WATER IS LIFE

The "Water is Life" project documents traditional water-hauling practices of the Diné people on the Navajo reservation. This lifestyle documentary photography clearly communicates the continuing importance of water in Indigenous communities. Each photograph carefully captures the daily realities faced while securing water, illustrating deep cultural connections to natural resources. The visual storytelling emphasizes water’s essential role in agriculture, ceremonies, and sustaining community health. Photographs produced in Fall 2023 for the Johns Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health clearly illustrate these practices and their significance. This work supports understanding and respect for Indigenous ways of life, emphasizing the essential nature of water access and quality. The images clearly portray the challenges and traditions involved, highlighting the enduring strength and resilience of the Diné people. Through careful visual storytelling, the photographs authentically communicate cultural values and daily practices related to water.
